Turkey Bacon

Today I tried cooking the turkey bacon.   It's was Willshire Classic Sliced Turkey /All Natural/Uncured Turkey Bacon from Turkey Thighs with nothing artificial and minimally processed.
A serving size is 1 slice
with 40 calories
1.5g fat
Og trans fat
0g carbohydrate
6g protein

The package gives three ways to cook it...stove-top, microwave, and bake
I tryed the microwave and bake ways
The slices in the microwave were quick and easy but I liked the ones from the oven.
Before putting the bacon on the cooking sheet I put a sheet of parchment paper on the pan to soak up any extra grease.  It worked out very well.
When it came to my picky bacon eaters in the house:
My son, who will eat a whole package of pork bacon if I let, him loved it.  He had 6 slices and was very happy.
My daughter who loves bacon, but only sometimes, gave it a try and said it was ok but didn't taste like bacon. She had two slices.
My hubby that is anti anything he calls "healthy" food gave me the funniest reaction.  When he came into the kitchen I told him I wanted him to try the bacon because it was a new kind.   He looked at it and commented how there wasn't any fat on it.  He tried it and said it was OK but it just tasted like a slice of ham not bacon.
I laughed and said "then that must be good since it's is made with turkey."
He says, "It tastes like turkey!"
I laughed again and said actually it is made from fish.
He doesn't like fish unless it's battered and fried.
He gets a look of his face and says, "ugh!  It tastes like fish!"
He had 4 slices even though he still says it tastes like fish....LOL

I liked it.  I had almost talked myself out of even trying it while it was cooking.  I was thinking that it couldn't possible be good since it didn't have any fat on it to get crispy.  I was wrong.  It had the taste of the meaty part of the bacon with a hint of the fat.  It was good but I'll still be keeping the pork bacon around for once a week.

  2. I have done the turkey bacon and like it. I love a simple blt and really with any lower sodium bacon, lite mayo and lite whole grain bread I can do one pretty low-cal.

I had to laugh about your family's reaction though :)

  3. Yum! BLT sounds yummy! We make em with gluten free bread we make but it's still yummy. That's a great idea to use the turkey bacon. Opens up how often we get to eat BLTs :)
